: SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT :
Thursday
3.3.11
Unfortunately, this week hasn't been a very successful one. I was sick over the weekend leading into the beginning of this week. I am working on catching up with the work that needs to be done for midterms next week. Yesterday, I worked more on the details of my floor plan and roughly organizing the pages of my construction drawings. My intent for the next week is to print my floor plans on 24x36 sheets in order to check for lineweights, continuity between pages, and other revisions. I also need to put in place my final revisions for my capstone book including such things as the table of contents, chapter content pages, and beginning the "Design Solution" chapter. By Monday (3/14), that chapter shall include the project timeline, specified diagrams, concept statement, and finalized floor plans.

The last few days have been spent on a variety of tasks. I've begun formatting the pages for the set of construction documents that are going to be produced by the end of the semester. I've completed the title block, adding a cover page, and determining the correct lineweights for printing. I've also made a bit more progress in reformatting the book and coming to a point where it would be up-to-date with this semesters work.
This last week has also been spent working in 3dsMax and getting reacquainted with the program and its tools. Below are a few rough renderings of the structures that surround the spiral staircase leading up to the third level. The next step is to build the product displays and later animate how they are assembled. At the same time, draw the details for each piece and organize the complete set of construction documents.

Last Friday, I retrieved construction documents of a couple different booths from a dermatology convention held in New Orleans recently. After looking through them, I believe it will be helpful in understanding the organization of a set of drawings and the extent of what may be expected for this project. There are a few good examples of numerous pieces, how they are labeled, and diagrams for the layout of graphic panels. Also, in preparation for the models I'll be making for this project, I've enrolled in an instruction class for the Design Shop to learn various tools and machines.
The last week of work was off to a slow start. Although, I feel like I've finally got a grip on the final floor plan of the booth. The challenge this week was understanding the structural integrity of the exhibit and how it was going to remain self-standing. Originally I was designing around the idea that steel frame columns would be braced into walls and platforms supporting the levels above. After discussion, the final solution will be sticking with the steel frame columns and running cables between them for bracing for each floor. The vertical rods will be grounded to the convention center floor and flooring for the exhibit will cover the structural work. The rough floor plan in CAD, shown below, illustrates the basic flow and ideal movement of the space. Currently, I am modeling those shapes in 3dsMax to understand the feel of the space; while simultaneously, adjusting them in plan so that they may be structurally supported.

Since last Thursday, I've worked on developing the staircase for the exhibit. I realized that the formation and design of the stairs was necessary in order to continue on with the rest of the floor plan. The spiral staircase is accessed from the ground floor and leads users to two additional levels. There were many challenges when designing this structure: determining where the landings should be placed, making sure the treads were wide enough for users near the center pole, and allowing enough head room. I used 3dsMax to construct the staircase before entering it into CAD, which made the design easier to understand and replicate for a 2D drawing. The second and third levels of the exhibit are coming together nicely. However, the ground level is still somewhat vague until final decisions are made on what type of customized pieces will be used.
I've also worked more on the capstone book. I've been using the recommended outline and comparing it with the contents that currently stand. I've rearranged some of the pages and their content; as well as, added introduction paragraphs and notes where needed. The next step is to scan and place the additional blocking diagrams that were used in the recent preliminary design of the exhibit.

Since Monday, more revisions and changes have been made to my logo and book format. During the process of creating a logo, I learned a lot in IllustratorCS4. I have only ever used the program to make a resume, text document, or flyer. With the help of classmates and tutorials, the ability to draw and create graphics in Illustrator has become so much more of an easier task. And with the experience of compiling a book last semester, I spent time reorganizing files to make the assembly somewhat of a smoother process.
Yesterday, I revisited blocking diagrams for the exhibit in order to accommodate the addition of custom display pieces. After looking through some images while researching modular stands, I was starting to envision what direction the levels of my design are going to take. The nature of my design has become more sophisticated in form and structure. I spent time this afternoon drawing more detailed blocking diagrams with the intention of putting it into CAD tomorrow. In combination with doing these preliminary drawings, I'm forced to start designing the bike racks and other product displays in more detail. Unfortunately, I feel like I have yet to reach the peak of creativity when designing bike racks.

Blog entry number one! Within the last day, I have worked on setting up the format for this site. Being that this is my first attempt at blogging, the layout and its components could change according to the amount of information uploaded.
However, the bulk of my progress this past week has been made in finalizing my logo. The logo was a difficult process for me, seeing as though the task was to re-brand the company graphically. The challenges were using the colors from Raleigh USA's existing logo; effectively incorporating the shapes that will be used in the design; considering techniques to market them in a positive way; and in the meantime, fighting an unwelcome computer virus. With the logo pretty much in place, I have begun efforts in re-formatting my book. Colors and fonts will change, but margins from the book created during the fall will allow for the same basic page layout.
I also started researching different modular/prefabricated stands that could be utilized in my design. After seeing what was available on the market, I realized my original intentions for the number of custom pieces has to change. The plan to design 2-3 pieces has grown to 5 or 6. Nonetheless, it will create for a better design since I'll have the freedom to choose practically any shape, color, and material. I also looked at Raleigh USA's website in order to select the quantity and type of merchandise that will be used for the booth's product display.
